Welcome to an exciting journey into the world of synthetic molecular communication and the creation of the Internet of Cells! The course “Building the Internet of Cells with Synthetic Molecular Communication” is offered jointly by FAU and TUM and will introduce you to the latest scientific discoveries and technological advances in synthetic molecular communication.
Synthetic molecular communication aims to revolutionize personalized medicine, environmental monitoring, and bioengineering by mimicking, controlling, and/or enhancing natural molecular communication processes; especially for communication environments where conventional communication based on electromagnetic waves is infeasible. Synthetic molecular communication is envisioned to enable, among other things:
- Controlled communication with natural cells for therapy, e.g., cancer treatment;
- Advancements in new medicines through bio-manufacturing processes based on parallelized miniaturized bioreactors;
- Early detection of epidemics through wastewater monitoring using appropriate environmental sensors;
- Remote monitoring of human or animal health status using a network of in-body nanodevices that recently have become prominent even in Hollywood, thus making science fiction a reality.
The course will cover the theoretical and practical basics of molecular communication and synthetic biology and will be divided into two parts. First, each student will present a research topic related to molecular communication. In the second part, you’ll work in teams to simulate a molecular communication system or build/test an experimental prototype.
Join us for Summer Academy 2025, which will take place from September 21 to October 3 in the beautiful Sarntal Alps in Trentino-Alto Adige. The course targets advanced Bachelor and Master students with a background in natural science, engineering, computer science, or medicine. If you’re interested in attending this exciting course, please apply by May 1, 2025 via the Summer Academy website (which will be updated soon). We look forward to seeing you!
